Tehran: Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baqaei says that the United States does not have a serious approach regarding the nuclear issue and sanctions.
Baqaei spoke about the latest status of negotiations between Iran and the United States in a television program on Thursday.
The spokesperson said that over the past year and a half, whenever Iran has engaged in talks with the US regarding the nuclear issue and the lifting of sanctions, the US has simultaneously conducted military actions against Iran and intensified sanctions instead of lifting them, adding that the US has also committed acts of piracy against Iranian ships.
He underlined that the US is not serious about lifting sanctions and has not learned from past mistakes.
There is deep mistrust between the two countries, rooted in a long history of mistrust dating back even before the Islamic Revolution, the spokesperson said, adding that the US expects its maximum demands to be accepted, while Iran has always put forward its proposals based on ending the war and establishing a ceasefire.
Regarding a possible change of mediator in Iran-US talks, Baqaei said that many countries with various intentions have announced their readiness to mediate, but the official mediator remains Pakistan.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Baqaei referred to the seizure of an Iranian ship by the US, calling it an act of maritime piracy. He said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been pursuing the matter through the Pakistani mediator to secure the release of the detained citizens.
