New York: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the United States’ announcement extending the ceasefire with Iran, calling it an important step toward reducing tensions and creating space for diplomacy.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric spoke to reporters on Tuesday, noting that the Secretary-General welcomes the announcement by the United States to extend the ceasefire.
Dujarric stressed that the move is an important step toward de-escalation and for creating vital space for diplomacy and confidence-building between Iran and the United States.
The spokesperson urged all parties to seize this opportunity, refrain from any actions that could undermine the ceasefire, and engage constructively in negotiations to reach a durable and sustainable solution.
Dujarric added that the secretary-general supports Pakistan’s efforts to facilitate further talks and hopes these initiatives will help establish conditions for a comprehensive and lasting resolution of the conflict.
On April 21, US President Donald Trump announced that, at Pakistan’s request, he would extend the ceasefire with Iran until Iran’s proposal is presented and the negotiations reach a conclusion in one way or another.
At the same time, consistent with his bullying approach, Trump said he had ordered the US military to maintain the blockade and remain fully prepared and capable in all respects.
The ceasefire between Iran and the US-Israeli coalition was first declared on April 7, 2026, for two weeks, following a 40-day war that began on February 28, 2026, with the assassination of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and several officials. Talks between Tehran and Washington, hosted by Islamabad on April 11, 2026, and led by Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and US Vice President J.D. Vance, ended without an agreement.
