Indian Railway on Tuesday has renamed Maharashtra's Ahmednagar Railway station as Ahilyanagar to pay tribute to a historic figure, Ahilya Bai Holkar.
The change was announced by the Central Railway’s Pune Division, following the Government of Maharashtra’s decision to rename the city of Ahmednagar itself to Ahilyanagar. The renaming is part of an effort to pay tribute to Ahilyabai Holkar’s contributions to public welfare and governance during her reign in the 18th century.
Importantly, while the name has changed, the station code 'ANG' remains unchanged, as per the statement released by Central Railway.
Passengers and the general public are advised to take note of the updated name on tickets, signage, and railway announcements.
Ahilya Bai Holkar is remembered for her just and visionary rule and for undertaking numerous temple restorations across India. This renaming stands as a tribute to her enduring legacy, a statement released by the Central Railway said.
Earlier, in a historic shift over a century on, the Central Railway is realigning the Harbour Line tracks to build a new station structure at Kurla. During a 14.5-hour mega block, the proposed diversion of rail lines between Kurla and Tilak Nagar stations will take place.
"It is being planned to realign and shift the tracks westwards to align with the new elevated station work. The elevated station at Kurla, part of the 5th and 6th lines, will not only cater to regular traffic but also have locals originating and terminating there. To proceed with the elevated station project at Kurla, we needed to use the space occupied by the existing century-old tracks. To keep trains running, we built a new set of tracks for a small stretch, where all existing Harbour Line traffic will be diverted as the work on the elevated corridor continues,” a senior official said.
The elevated railway station rises shortly after Chunabhatti station as the train moves towards Kurla and enters the new section. It lands just before the Santacruz–Chembur Link Road crossover on the Harbour Line near Tilak Nagar station. To facilitate this construction, the new set of two tracks has been built over marshy land between Kurla and Tilak Nagar stations, and the trains will be diverted here from Monday,” he explained.
