Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday, September 15 welcomed the Supreme Court’s order upholding provisions of the Waqf Amendment Act, describing the verdict as a “positive sign for democracy” and a reaffirmation of Parliament’s authority.
Speaking to reporters, Rijiju said the apex court had delivered the judgment after a detailed hearing in which the government’s position was comprehensively presented. “The Supreme Court knows the entire subject. On behalf of the government, our Solicitor General explained in detail the provisions of the Act, its intent, and the government’s thinking. I believe that whatever the Supreme Court bench has decided is a very good sign for our democracy,” he stated.
He further emphasized that laws passed by Parliament cannot be casually rejected, a principle that the court has reinforced through its verdict. “I am satisfied with the judgment of the Supreme Court. Whenever any decision comes from the highest court of the country, it creates an impact. In this case, the decision of Parliament has been upheld,” Rijiju said.
The Union Minister also noted that the government would carefully examine the concerns of practicing Muslims in the context of the Act and consider what should be included in the rules moving forward.
