China says it values Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei’s commitment against development of nuclear weapons, besides respecting Iran’s right to pursue peaceful nuclear energy.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the remarks during a joint press conference with French counterpart Jean-Noel Barrot in Paris on Friday.
The Chinese official noted how Ayatollah Khamenei had repeated the Islamic Republic’s firm commitment in this regard on multiple occasions.
The Leader has issued a fatwa categorically prohibiting either pursuance, development or stockpiling of such non-conventional weapons on moral and religious grounds.
The United States and its allies, especially the Israeli regime, have, however, been consistently accusing the country of “diverting” its peaceful nuclear energy program towards “military purposes” – a claim that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has failed to verify, despite its most intrusive inspections to date.
Condemning Israeli, US aggression
Wang, meanwhile, strongly denounced the Israeli regime’s war against the Islamic Republic last month that was joined by the US towards its end.
The aggression saw the regime attack Iranian nuclear and military sites as well as Iranian civilians, claiming the lives of at least 935 people, including senior military officials and nuclear scientists. The latter group was targeted inside their residential buildings.
The regime eventually requested a ceasefire after 12 days, bowing under pressure from the Islamic Republic’s determined retaliatory strikes. As the aggression was winding down, however, the US entered the fray at the regime’s request, hitting several Iranian nuclear facilities.
The duo used the IAEA Board of Governors’ most recent anti-Iranian resolution as a pretext for their atrocities.
Wang said the Israeli strikes “lacked legitimacy,” and censured the US’s “reckless” bombing of a sovereign state, which, he underlined, has set a bad precedence.
“Should a nuclear disaster occur, the entire world would bear the consequences,” he, meanwhile, warned.
The official further said Beijing accorded respect to the Islamic Republic’s right to using peaceful nuclear energy. He reminded that Iran was a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and was, therefore, entitled to such pursuit.
He regretted that the international community had so far failed to seize upon available opportunities for peaceful resolution of differences concerning Iran’s nuclear energy program.
“Although the world has heard the knock on the door of peace, it has ultimately failed to open the door to peace,” Wang said, expressing Beijing's deep regret regarding this failure.
According to Wang, had the world risen up to such chance, the Iranian nuclear issue could have been a model for resolving international disputes through dialogue and consultation.
“War cannot resolve the Iranian nuclear issue and the abuse of force would only escalate conflicts and deepen hatred,” the top diplomat said.
"If right and wrong are judged solely by strength, where do rules and justice stand? True peace cannot be achieved through strength alone -- it risks opening Pandora's box."
