Donald Trump may have to contend with a Democratic-controlled Congress for the remainder of his presidency, but social media users in India have already imagined a different future for the US President.
The memes also found their way into Indian politics, with Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra joining the trolling.
Reacting to the post-election chatter, Moitra took a swipe at Trump with a post on X, writing: "Fraand Doland needs Gyanu…", referring to chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The quip appeared to play on the idea of Kumar being offered a move to the US, turning the American election upset into another opportunity for political satire closer home.
Even Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke doubled down on the joke. “Gyanesh Kumar would have never let this happen to Trump,” he wrote in a post on X.
Youtuber Dhruv Rathee said, "Don’t forget that Trump praised Gyanesh Kumar. It tells you a lot about Gyanesh," sharing a media report referring to Trump praising India's voter ID system.
One AI-generated video, shared by the Iranian embassy in India, imagined a rather undignified end to Trump's White House stint. The clip shows the US president fainting before being dragged out of the White House and dumped into a garbage bin.
Another AI-generated video portrayed the US President as an Indian street-food vendor selling sattu ka sharbat. In another imagined career switch, Trump is seen trading the Oval Office for the hustle of an Indian roadside food stall.
The Democrats have secured control of both chambers of Congress, flipping several Republican-held Senate seats, including in traditionally conservative states. The result is expected to make Trump's legislative agenda considerably harder to push through, while giving Democrats greater powers to scrutinise his administration.
The President had made the midterms a test of his political standing, and the outcome has handed his opponents plenty of ammunition. Democrats were now preparing to use their congressional majority to challenge the administration's policies and investigate his actions.
