Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday participated in the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan in the Parliament House complex in New Delhi, interacting with parliamentary leaders and foreign delegates attending the two-day gathering.
The forum, being hosted under India's chairship, brings together representatives of BRICS member and partner countries to strengthen parliamentary cooperation and discuss people-centric development. The discussions are scheduled to cover institutional resilience, ethical artificial intelligence, digital transformation, global governance reforms and sustainable development.
Om Birla welcomes parliamentary delegations
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla chaired the opening session and welcomed delegates from BRICS member nations, highlighting the importance of dialogue, mutual respect and cooperation among participating countries.
In his inaugural address, Birla said, "On this occasion, the presence of parliamentary delegations from BRICS member nations in India, coming to the world's largest democratic nation and sharing a joint commitment, will in itself be a special experience."
He added, "The presence of the BRICS Parliamentary Cooperation in India demonstrates our shared commitment to dialogue, mutual respect, and our shared trust in democratic values."
Forum focuses on parliamentary cooperation
Birla highlighted the growing international significance of BRICS and the role parliamentary institutions can play in strengthening cooperation among member countries.
The Speaker noted that BRICS nations represent a substantial share of the world's population, landmass and economic activity, giving them a collective responsibility to address international challenges.
"BRICS countries may differ geographically, culturally, linguistically, and socially, but our shared responsibility toward democratic values and humanity binds us together," he said.
Birla stresses peaceful resolution of global challenges
Addressing the role of legislatures in international relations, Birla said parliamentary engagement could help build trust, ease tensions and encourage peaceful solutions to global problems.
"Parliaments can play a special role in strengthening mutual understanding and trust, reducing international tension and resolving global challenges peacefully," he said.
The forum's agenda includes discussions on strengthening institutions, promoting responsible use of artificial intelligence, improving global governance and advancing sustainable development.
BRICS urged to strengthen voice of Global South
Birla also emphasised the potential of BRICS to represent the concerns of developing countries in international decision-making.
"BRICS has the ability to become an empowered voice of the Global South. We have to make sure that our ambitions are not just limited to mere discussion, but should also be practical and achievable," he said.
