Nearly two and a half years after a classroom assault that sparked nationwide outrage, the Uttar Pradesh government has released ₹1.38 lakh to cover the educational expenses of a Muslim student from Muzaffarnagar. The one-time allocation will settle outstanding school fees and provide uniforms, socks, stationery, textbooks and transport costs.
The incident occurred in 2023 at Neha Public School in Khubbapur village under the Mansurpur area of Muzaffarnagar district. The school principal ordered a classmate to slap the boy while making derogatory remarks about his faith. A video of the assault circulated widely on social media, prompting the National Human Rights Commission to take suo motu cognisance and issue a notice to the state government.
Following a Supreme Court directive, the then Basic Shiksha Adhikari, Shubham Shukla, arranged the student’s admission to Shardain School, a reputed institution in Muzaffarnagar city. Initially, the Basic Education Department bore the costs. Later, the Syed Murtaza Memorial Trust assumed responsibility for the fees. When the trust failed to deposit the money on time, uncertainty arose over the child’s continued education.
Current BSA Sandeep Kumar confirmed that the department had written to the state government seeking a special budget. The government has now approved the ₹1.38 lakh grant directly. Officials say the funds will clear pending dues and meet immediate needs such as uniforms and educational materials.
The allocation marks a formal government commitment to support the student’s schooling after earlier arrangements involving the education department and a charitable trust proved unreliable. It remains unclear whether the full amount has already been transferred to the school or how future expenses will be managed beyond this one-time sanction.
