The United Russia party, the political vehicle of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has achieved a historic victory in the country’s Duma elections. Ella Pamfilova, head of the Central Election Commission of Russia, announced that the party garnered 57.83 percent of the votes cast.
This impressive result translates into United Russia securing 355 seats in the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, setting a new record for the party in the history of Russian parliamentary elections. This outcome grants the party a commanding majority in the 450-seat legislature.
Initial vote counts indicate that four other political parties managed to cross the electoral threshold and gain representation in parliament. The Communist Party secured 13.81 percent of the vote, while the nationalist LDPR party obtained approximately 8.98 percent. The New People party followed with 7.96 percent of the ballots. The A Just Russia party also narrowly surpassed the five percent threshold required for parliamentary entry.
The head of Russia’s Central Election Commission stated on Monday that voter turnout for the State Duma elections stood at 59.32 percent, with over 62.6 million citizens participating in the electoral process.
