Tehran: Thousands of mourners gathered at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Mosalla on Saturday as Iran began a multi-day farewell ceremony for the late Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, who was martyred in a US-Israeli terror attack on February 28.
The ceremony, which opened in the early hours of Saturday, is being held as a historic national event, bringing together large crowds for a final farewell to the martyred Leader while renewing allegiance to the ideals of the Islamic Revolution, Islam, the Revolution’s founders, and the nation’s martyrs.
The headquarters overseeing the commemoration announced that the farewell ceremony will continue on Saturday and Sunday. The funeral procession is scheduled to take place in Tehran on Monday.
His body will then be taken to the holy city of Qom for a funeral procession on Tuesday, before being transferred to Mashhad, where he will be laid to rest at the shrine of Imam Reza (PBUH) on Thursday.
Special farewell and funeral ceremonies are also scheduled to be held in Najaf and Karbala on Wednesday. Formal tribute ceremonies attended by foreign leaders, officials, and representatives of various religions were held in Tehran on Friday.
