Congress leader and Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan on Sunday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene on behalf of a group of Indian healthcare professionals, predominantly from Kerala, who are facing a distressing situation in Dubai.
The medical workers, previously employed at the Iranian Hospital located on Al Wasl Road in Jumeirah, Dubai, suddenly lost their employment after the hospital was ordered to close during a recent war-related situation. Following the closure, many former employees have faced unexpected visa restrictions in the United Arab Emirates, with employment, visit, and even spouse visas being rejected under remarks related to security reasons in the immigration system.
In a grievance letter forwarded to the Chief Minister, the affected nurses and other healthcare professionals emphasised that they have strictly obeyed the law and regulations and have never engaged in any unlawful activities.
Highlighting years of their dedicated service, the workers said that they had worked on the front lines at a great personal risk during the COVID-19 pandemic to support the local healthcare system.
Further, the workers also described the financial, emotional and legal turmoil of their families due to the sudden visa rejection in the letter. They also said that the situation has jeopardised their children’s education and has also made it uncertain for them to continue living in the country.
The professionals pointed out that they are currently on a limited grace period and face impending deportation. They expressed deep concern that those who attempted to exit early have faced entry bans, which would permanently revoke their professional licenses and ruin their futures. With staff from other nationalities already approaching their respective embassies, the Indian workers requested that the government take up the matter with the Indian Embassy and UAE authorities to review and remove the restrictions so they can obtain new visas and secure their livelihoods.
