Tehran: The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) says it has targeted a cargo ship owned by the “US-Zionist enemy” in a retaliatory operation.
According to a statement issued by the IRGC Public Relations Department on Monday, the Panama-flagged MSC Sariska was struck by a cruise missile.
The statement said the operation was carried out in retaliation for an earlier US attack on the Iranian vessel Lian Star in the Sea of Oman.
The IRGC did not disclose details about possible damage to the MSC Sariska, but warned that “any act of aggression by the child-killing US army in this region will be met with a decisive response.”
The MSC Sariska was reportedly struck near Iraq.
The Iranian vessel Lian Star was hit by a Hellfire missile fired into its engine room on May 30, according to a statement by United States Central Command (CENTCOM). It claimed that the Gambia-flagged vessel was attempting to sail toward an Iranian port in violation of a US naval blockade imposed on April 11.
Washington imposed the blockade three days after a ceasefire took effect, ending 40 days of hostilities between Iran and the US-Israeli alliance. Iran says the blockade must be lifted as part of any agreement to permanently end the war.
