Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman says the Israeli regime is deliberately attempting to expand the scope of the current Israeli-American-initiated war on Iran and drag the region into a broader conflagration.
Speaking at a press conference held inside a school targeted by US-Israeli assaults in Tehran on Tuesday, Esmaeil Baghaei said destabilizing the region is “the project of the Zionist regime, and the United States was also drawn onto this path.”
“The Zionist regime will undoubtedly seek to exploit the situation, expand the scope of fire, and carry out acts of sabotage in regional countries in order to transform the war it has initiated together with the United States against Iran into a widespread regional conflict,” Baghaei said.
The remarks come amid reports of arrests of Mossad agents in Saudi Arabia and Qatar as they were planning for bombings in the Arab countries.
Baghaei pointed out Tehran had previously cautioned that any new aggression launched against the Islamic Republic would not remain limited to Iran.
“It had previously been emphasized that if a war were launched against Iran, its scope would extend to the region. This warning was issued responsibly and at the highest levels, and the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei had also made clear that such a war would become a regional war,” the official said.
As opposed to such incendiary efforts, he asserted, the Islamic Republic’s Armed Forces target only military objectives, including locations where American military bases and garrisons are stationed.
The Iranian operations against those bases are "used to attack Iran, not because Iran seeks regional insecurity,” he said.
Baghaei said the renewed aggression against Iran that began on Saturday did not even spare the diplomatic police inside the country, warning that the parties responsible for such aggression would not spare the regional states either.
“The same individuals who targeted the diplomatic police will not hesitate to design false flag operations to attack diplomatic premises in regional countries in order to expand their war,” he remarked.
‘Iran subject to genocide; enemies can’t change a nation’s dream’
“What is happening in Iran is a genocide, meaning an attempt to destroy an ethnicity: Targeting Iranian girls, Iran’s elites, and everything that forms the foundation of a country is nothing but an effort to alter a nation’s dream,” the official said.
The spokesman, though, stressed, “This dream will not change. They have left us no path, but resistance.”
According to Iran’s Red Crescent Society, at least 787 people have been killed throughout the aggression so far, including more than 160 children, who perished during a US-Israeli attack against a school in the southern province of Hormozgan.
Baghaei attributed the underway gruesome developments to the international community’s inaction and indifference towards the crimes committed over the past two and a half years.
He said the world witnessed genocide in the Gaza Strip and did not act, and it saw crimes and aggression against neighboring countries and did not act.
Diplomacy and call for UN action
In response to a question about Tehran’s conditions for ending the war, Baghaei said the Islamic Republic did not choose military confrontation in the first place.
“This military aggression was not our choice. Our choice has always been diplomacy. We made every effort until the very last moment to avoid entering into a process of war, but the other side decided to wage war,” he said.
The official stressed that ending the ongoing US-Israeli assaults is the only way to end the war.
“The United Nations Security Council has a duty to act. Although past experience has shown that in some cases it has failed to take action, under the current circumstances there is no obstacle other than the will of the international community,” he said.
“The international community must decide, before it is too late and the war becomes prolonged and expansive, to ensure that the Security Council fulfills its responsibilities and, by compelling the aggressing parties to cease their aggression, restores security and stability to the region.”
