The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued a cautionary advisory to all state governments, calling for heightened vigilance against potential communal unrest in India in the wake of recent military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran.
In a letter circulated on February 28, the MHA warned that escalating tensions in the Middle East could have “ripple effects” within the country, particularly through inflammatory rhetoric during religious gatherings or public addresses.
‘Identify pro-Iran radical preachers’: MHA tells states
The advisory specifically urged state authorities to monitor and identify “pro-Iran radical preachers giving inflammatory sermons” that could incite unrest or aggravate communal tensions. It emphasised the need for enhanced intelligence-sharing mechanisms and proactive preventive measures to ensure there is no breakdown of law and order.
The Home Ministry’s communication blends routine law-and-order preparedness with a focused warning about speeches or sermons that may “aggravate communal sentiments” during a sensitive period.
Internet speeds curtailed in Kashmir
Mobile internet speeds have been restricted across Kashmir following protests over the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
According to officials, the decision to throttle mobile data services was taken as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order amid heightened public sentiment. The move came after demonstrations were reported from several parts of the Valley.
Khamenei was killed in a US-Israel airstrike in Tehran on Saturday. Iranian state media confirmed his death on Sunday, prompting protests and mourning in several countries, including India.
In Kashmir, which has an estimated 15 lakh Shia population, large protests were reported in areas such as Lal Chowk and Saida Kadal in Srinagar, as well as Budgam, Bandipora, Anantnag and Pulwama, an official said.
Security forces were deployed in sensitive locations to prevent any escalation. Authorities said the restrictions on internet speed would remain under review depending on the prevailing situation.
India exercising caution amid Middle East escalation
These security measures are being taken following the escalation in the Middle East after joint military operations by the US and Israel targeting Iranian cities and military infrastructure, fuelling concerns of a wider regional conflict.
India has called for restraint from all sides and reiterated the importance of ensuring the safety and security of its citizens, including the large Indian diaspora residing in the Gulf region.
Officials in New Delhi are closely tracking the geopolitical situation as well as its potential domestic impact. Security agencies fear that heightened emotions over developments abroad could be exploited by extremist elements to stir local tensions.
