Opposition MPs convened at the office of Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge on February 5 to outline their strategy for Thursday’s Parliament proceedings. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, was also present at the meeting.
The Opposition has been protesting against the Centre for allegedly barring Rahul Gandhi from addressing the Lower House in relation to former Army Chief General MM Naravane’s unpublished memoir about the 2020 China standoff. The INDIA bloc has similarly pressed for debate on the India-US trade deal. However, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal addressed Parliament by affirming that sensitive economic sectors such as agriculture and dairy have been protected.
Both Houses of Parliament are due to resume discussion on the motion of ‘Thanks to the President’s Address’ during the ongoing Budget Session on Thursday. In the Lok Sabha, the motion was moved by Sarbananda Sonowal and seconded by Tejasvi Surya, with the House allocating 18 hours for the debate.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been expected to respond to the Motion of Thanks in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday; however, following repeated disruptions and Opposition sloganeering, the Speaker adjourned the House. The Prime Minister is now likely to reply in the Rajya Sabha as discussions continue there.
In the Upper House, BJP MP Sadananad Master moved the motion of thanks, which responds to President Droupadi Murmu’s address to a joint sitting of both Houses marking the Budget Session’s commencement on January 28.
According to the List of Business, the Lok Sabha is set to begin discussion on the Union Budget 2026-27. The Rajya Sabha will open its proceedings with an obituary reference to former MP Thomas Kuthiravattom.
