Over 5.82 million voters’ names were dropped from the draft roll of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal. The list was released by the Election Commission on Tuesday. Around 2.4 million are dead voters.
At least 127 names were deleted from the polling station at Bhowanipore in south Kolkata from where West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee casts her vote.
“The draft roll has been released. Around 5.82 million names of dead, absent, shifted and duplicate voters have been dropped from the draft roll,” said a senior official of the poll panel in Kolkata.
Over the next one month, till January 15, 2026, the poll panel will receive claims and objections from voters and political parties regarding inclusion and deletion of names in the draft roll. Hearing and verification will take place from January 16 to February 7, 2026. The final roll will be published on February 14, 2025.
A senior official said that there are around three million voters who couldn’t be mapped with the 2002 list when the last SIR was held. Another 16.7 million voters have come under the scanner of the poll panel due to discrepancies in their enumeration forms.
The discrepancies have been divided into seven categories such as voters whose father’s name doesn’t match with the 2002 list, the age gap of the voter with his parents is less than 15 years or more than 50 years, age gap with grandparents is less than 40 years and mismatch in the gender of the elector among others.
“The BLOs will reverify the details of these voters after a house visit. If the discrepancies still remain, they will be called for hearing by the ERO,” said an official.
More than 8.5 million voters have been detected with mismatches in their father’s names. There are around two million voters who are more than 45 years of age but their names do not appear in the 2002 list. The age gap of another 1.1 million voters with their parents is less than 15 years. Gender mismatches have been detected in entries of around 1.3 million voters.
Here's a breakdown of how many voters deleted due to what reason-
According to the data released by the WB CEO sources, over 24 lakh voters have been marked as ‘dead’ in the draft list, over 12 lakh voters have been marked as missing since could not be traced to their registered addressing, almost 20 lakh voters were found to have relocated permanently from their constituencies and another 1.38 lakh voters were deleted due to their duplicate name entries. Over 57,000 names were deleted from the list due to reasons other than the ones already mentioned.
The exact numbers are-
Dead: 2,416,852 people
Relocated: 1,988,076 people
Missing: 1,220,038 people
Duplicate: 138,328 people
