Tehran:Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says the United States, with the support of some of its Western allies, is attempting to implement policies by force and return international relations to what existed before the formation of the United Nations.
Araghchi made the remarks while addressing questions related to global developments and Iran’s foreign policy, on the sidelines of an international conference dubbed “International Law under Attack: Aggression and Defense” in Tehran on Sunday.
He said the US’s use of force and its ongoing erosion of the foundations of international law amount to “the law of the jungle,” an approach that cannot endure.
According to him, these policies allow countries to do whatever they want, attack anywhere, anytime, order the evacuation of cities, demand unconditional surrender, and decide what should and should not be done in which country.
Pointing out that Iran is committed to upholding international values, law, and diplomacy to bring peace and stability, he warned that the law of the jungle would force countries to strengthen and defend themselves without relying on international law, ultimately leading to chaos.
Araghchi also addressed the initiative in the field of negotiations and the role played by the Foreign Ministry, saying the Islamic Republic engaged in dialogue on the condition that the interests and rights of the Iranian people are fully protected.
In a situation where the other side insists on advancing negotiations, with excessive demands, no Iranian will be willing to go along with it, he added, noting that “Our policy is quite clear, we continue to pursue diplomacy and support peaceful resolution of international disputes, but at the same time, we will not bow down to bullying, hegemony, and excesses and will resist.”
In response to a question about potential negotiations with the United States, the minister clarified Iran had always been in favor of negotiations that are fair, strategic, and based on mutual interests, but the current approach of the US government in no way indicates its readiness for equal and fair negotiations.
He also commended the Foreign Ministry for fulfilling its duties during the 12-day Israeli-imposed war, as well as in the matter of the snapback mechanism in the UN Security Council.
Araghchi also touched on the nuclear issue, saying that while Iran, together with Russia and China, held a meeting with the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, there is no enrichment being carried out in the country, and that there are no undeclared enrichment facilities in the country.
In conclusion, the Foreign Minister emphasized the need for Iran’s right to enrichment and to use peaceful nuclear energy to be recognized by the international community, including the United States. “This is Iran’s undeniable right and we will never give up our right,” he added.
