Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday termed the Delhi blast incident a “failure of the Narendra Modi government”, and demanded a thorough investigation.
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, he said, “No leniency should be shown to anyone involved. Whoever is guilty must be punished. People should fear committing such acts. Fear must come through strict punishment.”
The Congress president said it is unfortunate that such incidents are happening in the national capital where all the intelligence agencies are based. “Even with all these agencies, the government has failed,” he noted.
Kharge further stated that his party will speak more on the issue once the full investigation report is released. He also said that the issue will be discussed in Parliament during the winter session.
At least 13 people were killed and over 20 others sustained injuries after a powerful explosion ripped through a car near Red Fort in Delhi on Monday.
According to the Delhi Police, the explosion was triggered from a slow moving Hyundai i20. While the exact nature of the blast is still unknown, it is being reported that a premature bomb likely made using ammonium nitrate was used.
The suspect who drove the car when it exploded has been identified as a doctor from Pulwama named Umar Un Nabi.
Nabi reportedly worked at Al-Falah Medical College in Haryana’s Faridabad where Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) police busted a ‘white-collar’ Jaish-e-Mohammed terror module hours before the Red Fort blast.
The J&K police, in a joint operation with Haryana Police, arrested one Dr Mujjabal and seized around 350 kg of ammonium nitrate from his home. Mujjabal also worked at Al-Falah University. A few more doctors, including a lady named Shaheen Saeed, were also arrested.
It is being suspected that Nabi was their associate and had gone missing after the police crackdown on their module.
Authorities believe that the Red Fort blast was triggered in panic after police busted the module. The terror suspects were reportedly planning major attacks across Delhi-NCR.
