Three Qatari diplomats are reportedly killed and two more injured near the Egyptian resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh amid Doha’s ongoing contribution to mediation of a ceasefire in the Israeli genocide in Gaza.
The casualties were caused on Saturday, when the car carrying the diplomats “overturned” about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the city, the Associated Press reported, citing “health officials.”
The incident took place as the occupants were travelling towards the city, they added.
It came after Qatar, along with Egypt and Turkey, helped mediate the first phase of a ceasefire plan aimed at ending the two-year-plus war of genocide.
The mediation efforts took place during indirect negotiations between Gaza’s Hamas resistance movement and the Israeli regime in the city.
It was not clear if the diplomats, whom the report said were part of the Qatari “protocol team,” were among the mediators.
Doha has served as a mediator since October 2023, when Tel Aviv launched the war that has claimed the lives of around 67,200 Palestinians, mostly women and children.
In September, the Israeli regime targeted Hamas’ negotiating team in the Qatari capital, assassinating at least six people.
Qatar vehemently denounced the aggression, besides lambasting the United States for refusing to warn it in advance, despite knowing about the prospect.
The Monday incident also came as Sharm el-Sheikh is about to host a high-profile summit on the first phase of the ceasefire plan.
