Yemen’s Armed Forces have carried out a missile strike on an Israeli oil tanker in the Red Sea for breaching a ban on ships bound for ports in the Israeli-occupied territories imposed in solidarity with Gaza.
Brigadier General Yahya Saree, spokesperson for Yemen’s military, announced in a televised statement on Monday that Yemeni forces had carried out a strike against the Liberia-flagged tanker Scarlet Ray in the northern tip of the sea, using a homegrown anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM).
Saree said the operation resulted in a direct hit on the ship and successfully achieved its objectives.
He affirmed that Yemeni armed forces “will continue their support for the Palestinian people by preventing Israeli ships or vessels bound for ports in the occupied Palestinian lands from sailing in the Red Sea and Arabian Sea.”
Saree further noted that Yemeni military units will press ahead with their operations until the Israeli aggression on Gaza stops and the blockade is lifted.
In response to the ongoing genocide in Gaza, which began in October 2023, Yemen launched a strategic maritime blockade to block the flow of military supplies to Israeli-occupied territories and to urge the international community to take measures to address the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
In the past two months, Yemen has ramped up its Red Sea operations, resuming targeting of Israeli-linked ships in the key maritime route.
On August 6, the Yemeni government announced sanctions against 64 ship owners who were violating the naval blockade.
These vessels are prohibited from transiting the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab Strait, Gulf of Aden, and Arabian Sea, the government stated, warning that the vessels will be targeted if they fall within the reach of the Yemeni Armed Forces.
In July, Yemeni forces attacked and sank two vessels bound for the occupied territories, Eternity C and the Magic Seas, in the Red Sea.
Between November 2023 and January 2025, Yemen launched over 100 operations targeting Israeli-linked ships, significantly impacting Israel’s economy.
The Yemeni Armed Forces have stated unequivocally that they will continue their operations until Israel puts an end to its ground and aerial assaults in Gaza.
Israel has killed more than 63,400 Palestinians in Gaza, so far, most of them women and children.
