A total of 145 MPs in Lok Sabha and 63 MPs in Rajya Sabha on Monday submitted a petition regarding the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Varma in connection with cash discovery row.
The 145 Lok Sabha members who submitted the impeachment motion include Anurag Thakur, Ravi Shankar Prasad, LoP Rahul Gandhi, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, PP Chaudhary, Supriya Sule and KC Venugopal. The notice was submitted against Justice Verma under Articles 124, 217, and 218 of the Constitution.
A motion for the removal of a judge has to be signed by not less than 100 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 50 in the Rajya Sabha. The motion can either be accepted or rejected by the Speaker/Chairman of the House.
Earlier, Congress MP K Suresh said that the party extended its full support to the impeachment move against Justice Varma, joining hands with the INDIA bloc parties.
On Sunday, Union parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju had said that over 100 lawmakers signed a notice for impeachment of the sitting high court judge.
Rijiju last week said that all political parties are on board on the issue of the impeachment of Justice Varma, from whose residence burnt wads of currency notes were found.
Though Justice Varma has denied any wrongdoing, a Supreme Court-appointed in-house inquiry panel has concluded that the judge and his family had active control over the storeroom, where the cash was found, proving his misconduct serious enough to seek his removal, according to news agency PTI.
