Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun says that his country does not seek to normalize relations with the Israeli regime.
Speaking on Friday, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said that Beirut was not currently interested in normalizing ties with Israel, something mentioned as a possibility by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar last week.
“Peace is the lack of a state of war, and this is what matters to us in Lebanon at the moment. As for the issue of normalization, it is not currently part of Lebanese foreign policy,” Aoun said, according to Al Jazeera.
He called on the Israeli regime to fully withdraw from Lebanon.
The comments by President Aoun come as Israel has continued to violate a ceasefire agreement with Lebanon, which took effect in November last year and ended over a year of hostilities between the regime and Hezbollah’s resistance movement.
Under the terms of the truce, Hezbollah had to retreat to the north of the Litani River, which is about 30km from the border with the Israeli-occupied territories, while Israel had to fully withdraw its troops.
Israel however still occupies five strategic locations in southern Lebanon. The regime also regularly strikes sites in Lebanon, especially in the south.
