Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has admitted that the regime has been arming and supporting a gang associated with the Daesh Takfiri terrorists in the besieged Gaza Strip to "counter the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas."
The confession came after Avigdor Lieberman, a Knesset member and the regime’s former minister for military affairs, said Israel had transferred weapons to criminal gangs.
“What did Lieberman leak? That security sources activated a clan in Gaza that opposes Hamas? What is bad about that?” Netanyahu said in a video posted to social media.
“It is only good, it is saving lives of Israeli soldiers.”
The European Council on Foreign Relations (EFCR) think tank said, "The criminal gang operating in the Rafah area is widely accused of looting aid trucks."
Netanyahu’s office did not deny the allegation, merely saying that “Israel is taking various steps to defeat Hamas, based on the recommendations of all security agency heads.”
Netanyahu also said the regime had “activated” local clans in the besieged Palestinian territory on the advice of “security officials.”
The group Lieberman was addressing in his remarks was a local Bedouin tribe led by Yasser Abu Shabab.
Lieberman told the Kan public broadcaster that the Israeli authorities, at Netanyahu’s direction, were arming a criminal group.
“Under the prime minister’s orders, Israel is transferring weapons to criminals in Gaza who are affiliated with the Daesh terrorist group, as a counterbalance to Hamas.”
“As far as I can tell, this wasn’t approved by the cabinet, and I’m not sure the military chief of staff even knows about it.”
The Abu Shabab clan was part of a Bedouin tribe that spans across the border between Gaza and Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.
Yasser Abu Shabab, head of Daesh-affiliated Abu Shabab clan spent time in prison in Gaza and his clan chiefs had recently denounced him as an Israeli “collaborator and a gangster.”
Evidence of the group’s role in Israel’s campaign of genocide led elders and leaders of the prominent Abu Shabab family to announce their disavowal of the group.
The ECFR said Abu Shabab was “reported to have been previously jailed by Hamas for drug smuggling. His brother is said to have been killed by Hamas during a crackdown against the group’s attacks on UN aid convoys.”
Hamas has killed a number of the gang’s members in recent days. The resistance movement said the group had “chosen betrayal and theft as their path.”
Hamas said it had evidence of “clear coordination between these looting gangs, collaborators with the occupation (Israel), and the enemy army itself in the looting of aid and the fabrication of humanitarian crises that deepen the suffering.”
Hamas said Lieberman’s words “reveal a dangerous truth: the Israeli army is arming criminal gangs in the Gaza Strip to create security and social chaos, advancing the occupation’s plans for systematic starvation and theft of humanitarian aid.”
Senior Israeli commanders have warned that the regime’s armed forces lack the manpower and resources to fulfill the goals in the besieged Gaza Strip. They say Hamas remains in control of the Gaza Strip even nearly two years into the campaign of genocide.
Israeli intelligence says virtually 20,000 Hamas fighters, including several commanders, remain active across Gaza.
