The Congress on Monday stepped up its attack on the government, saying that the country is feeling “cheated, humiliated and ashamed” by the way US President Donald Trump was the first to make the ceasefire announcement in the India-Pakistan conflict.
On the ruling BJP calling Operation Sindoor a “success”, senior Congress leader and former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel said: “If this is so, then why is a special Session of Parliament not being called? Questions can be asked and answers can be given. The whole world can hear it.”
He also said that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has decided that the Congress would boycott any all-party meeting if Prime Minister Narendra Modi doesn’t attend it. Modi has kept away from the two all-party meetings held since the Pahalgam terror attack.
Baghel added: “If 26 lives were lost (in the Pahalgam attack)… (were) the four or five terrorists caught? If they are not caught, how can you consider Operation Sindoor a success? Second, who is responsible for this? On your assurance, people went to Kashmir… And came back without their families.”
Addressing a press briefing at the AICC office, Baghel said: “The country is feeling cheated, humiliated and ashamed at the way Trump made the announcement… Have we accepted third-party mediation? What have we extracted from Pakistan? The people of the country deserve to know… Has the Simla Agreement been suspended? That’s why the Congress wants an all-party meeting and a special Session of the parliament.”
Also questioning the timing of the ceasefire, he said: “The PM was said to have given free hand to the forces. When was it withdrawn?”
The Congress leader accused the BJP of “politicising the issue”, when the whole country itself was united, and of “trying to appropriate the bravery of the forces”. “Is it appropriate to use the valour of the forces for politics? We have always combated terrorism firmly. There are countless examples. Even in this hour of crisis, the BJP was busy in politics. We demand transparency now,” said Baghel.
On the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack not being caught yet, he said: “If no one is held accountable for the lapse, such incidents may happen again.”
