Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad meets PM Modi, raises social and educational issues

New Delhi: Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad, the Grand Mufti of India, met Narendra Modi in the national capital on Sunday and held discussions on a wide range of social, humanitarian and developmental issues, with a particular focus on minority welfare.
During the interaction, the Grand Mufti shared feedback and concerns gathered from various communities during his recent tour of Kerala under the theme “With Humanity.” He also conveyed his reflections and message ahead of the forthcoming holy month of Ramadan. International developments and their broader implications were among the topics discussed, sources said.
The Prime Minister acknowledged and appreciated the educational and social initiatives led by Samasta Kerala Jam’iyyathul Ulama and Jamia Markaz, noting that such efforts contribute to social advancement and strengthen India’s global standing.
The meeting underscored the need for inclusive growth that reaches all sections of society, with emphasis on human development indicators and well-being alongside economic progress. Issues raised included equitable distribution of resources based on population and regional balance, concerns related to Waqf and SIR, protection of historic mosques and Islamic heritage sites, and the revival of minority-focused educational welfare schemes such as the Maulana Azad National Fellowship.
Other matters discussed ranged from ensuring justice for innocent individuals to challenges faced by Islamic institutions in North India, including Mubarakpur Jamia Ashrafiyya. Proposals for improved rail connectivity between major pilgrimage centres in South India and the development of the Aligarh University Malappuram Centre were also highlighted. The importance of stronger engagement between the Central government and minority communities across the country formed a key part of the dialogue.
Sheikh Abdul Rahman Saquafi, Secretary of Samasta Kerala Jam’iyyathul Ulama, and Dr. Muhammed Abdul Hakkim Azhari, Managing Director of Markaz Knowledge City, were present during the meeting.
