The Lok Sabha will hold a 16-hour-long discussion on Operation Sindoor starting July 28, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to participate after returning from his foreign visit to the UK and Maldives, sources told ANI.
According to the ANI report, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will respond to the detailed deliberations in the House.
Rajya Sabha to take up debate on July 29
Earlier in the day, the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of the Rajya Sabha met in the national capital and decided to hold a discussion on Operation Sindoor on July 29, ANI reported.
Sources said the government turned down the Opposition's demand for a farewell speech by former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar but agreed to allow seven retiring MPs to make their farewell addresses.
Opposition pushes for PM’s presence
Opposition parties have been insisting that the Prime Minister be present during the debate on Operation Sindoor. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, hit out at Modi over his silence on repeated “ceasefire” claims by US President Donald Trump.
"How can the Prime Minister give a statement? Kya bolenge PM, ki Trump ne karwaya hai? (What will he say? Did Trump announce it? He can't say it, but it is the truth. The entire world knows that Trump has announced a ceasefire. We can't hide from reality)," Gandhi told reporters.
He further added that this was not just about a ceasefire but also about key issues related to defence, defence manufacturing, and Operation Sindoor, which the Opposition wants debated thoroughly.
Gandhi slams government’s foreign policy
Gandhi also criticised the Modi government’s foreign policy, saying, “They have destroyed our foreign policy. You can hardly count on your fingers the number of countries that have supported us. No one has supported us.”
He pointed out that Trump has claimed at least 25 times that he helped broker a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, yet the Prime Minister had not issued a single response.
This comes after Trump, in a recent statement, once again repeated his claim that he had “stopped the war between India and Pakistan” in the context of trade negotiations.
