People from across all walks of life on Friday condemned the disqualification of Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi from Parliament and termed the action against the senior Congress leader a move against democracy. They said that it would bring together all opposition parties to fight against fascism.
Markose P U, a farmer from Pulpally region of Wayanad constituency told PTI, ''Fascism has reached our doorstep.'' ''Look at the hurried disqualification of the MP even though the court has granted time for filing an appeal, ''Markose said. ''I am not his party follower. But this shows that fascism has reached our doorstep. The people are concerned. Congress needs to step up, It amounts to challenging democracy.'' E P Philipkutty, a Kaniyambatta resident and an office-bearer of a farmers' association in the region, said the disqualification of the MP was political, and added that the people of the constituency suspect governmental interference in the court action.
''The people here suspect that the action against him is one-sided. Let's see what the higher courts can do,'' he said.
A social activist and a resident of Madakkimala near Kalpetta here, Vijayan, expressed the opinion that the action against Gandhi, who won with a massive majority of over four lakh votes from Wayanad was a ''move against democracy''.
''It seems like the government is afraid of Gandhi who raised his voice for the people. Gandhi mentioned the big frauds in his speech. The Modi government has disinvested from public sector undertakings and Gandhi named those who benefitted from it. Now, Modi and Shah are afraid,'' Vijayan, who is also the convenor of the medical college action committee here, said.
He said the incident was condemnable and would bring together all opposition political parties together to fight against the fascist forces.
Another farmer from Pulpally, Shaji Panachikkal, said the union government's dictatorial approach was meant to silence Gandhi.
''Even though the court has granted time to file appeal, the government, in an arrogant manner disqualified Gandhi. This is an attempt to muzzle the opposition voices. The people are watching,'' Panachikkal said. He added that the people would not accept this.
The Congress party and a section of Left workers in the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency also expressed sentiments that the BJP was engaged in revenge politics against the Gandhi scion.
