On November 1, the 69th formation day of Kerala, the LDF government led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan declared that the state has "ended extreme poverty". The rare feat has received praise from China.
Lauding the communist government in the state, Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong posted on X, "Warm congratulations to Kerala on its historic achievement in ending extreme poverty."
"To eliminate poverty is the common mission of humanity," he added.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan thanked Feihong, saying Kerala's achievement "reflects our shared commitment to social justice and human dignity".
"Thank you @China_Amb_India for the warm greetings on Kerala Piravi. Kerala's achievement in eradicating extreme poverty reflects our shared commitment to social justice and human dignity. Your kind words of encouragement are deeply appreciated," Pinarayi said on X.
On Saturday, the chief minister made the formal declaration during a special session of the legislative assembly, saying Kerala is witnessing the dawn of a new era.
However, the session was boycotted by the Congress-led opposition, which slammed the declaration as a "fraud" to deceive voters ahead of the upcoming local body and assembly elections.
Responding to the UDF allegations, Pinarayi said the opposition was referring to its own habits when it says "fraud". "We only say what we can implement. We have implemented what we had said. That is our reply to the opposition leader," he said.
In 2021, when the LDF government returned to power, the new cabinet vowed to make Kerala free of extreme poverty. Pinarayi's government said they identified 64,006 extremely poor families and introduced tailored measures to support them. "From tribal hamlets to coastal communities, Kerala made sure no one was left behind," the CM said in a statement.
