Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday strongly made a case for strengthening the public education system and government-run institutions in the country.
“….If you look at the success of India’s education system, the foundation of our system was in public education system,” Mr Gandhi said at an interactive session with academicians here.
He said major and top educational institutions in India are those, run by the government.
“I am not saying here that there is no space for private institutions….there has to be a space. But the guiding line, the foundation and the super structure has to be a public education system. Private institutions must look towards public institutions,” he said.
The Congress president said there is need to ensure ‘stability’ in the careers of academicians so that there is harmony in the class room.
“The idea that you have teachers on contract and fire them at will cannot give them a vision of the future. You cannot simply have harmony in the class,” Mr Gandhi said.
Similarly, he expressed concern at the high cost the students and their parents have to pay up to meet the requirements to get a technical degree.
