With 8,909 coronavirus cases, 217 deaths in 24 hours, India records biggest single-day spike

Nearly 9,000 positive cases of the novel coronavirus and a record number of 217 deaths have been registered in India in the last 24 hours.
This is the highest single-day jump in both coronavirus cases and fatalities in India in a day.
With India recording 8,909 infections in 24 hours, ending Wednesday morning, the coronavirus case tally of the country has now climbed to 2,07,615. India breached the 2-lakh mark on Tuesday evening.
According to the latest data by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the total number of cases in India now include 1,01,497 active cases, while 1,00,303 have recovered/discharged/migrated. The Covid-19 death toll, meanwhile, has climbed to 5,815, as per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
As per the latest data, Maharashtra has recorded over 72,000 cases of coronavirus and 2,465 deaths. At 24,586 cases, Tamil Nadu follows Maharashtra in terms of total coronavirus cases.
On Tuesday, India recorded 8,171 Covid-19 cases and 204 deaths, taking the country's tally to 1,98,706 and the death toll to 5.598.
