Supporting Indian-American Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said millions of Indians are proud of his work.
Taking on the ruling BJP, he said in a tweet, 'Dear Mr Banerjee, These bigots are blinded by hatred and have no idea what a professional is. You cannot explain it to them, even if you tried for a decade.'
'Please be certain that millions of Indians are proud of your work,' he said.
Mr Banerjee on Saturday told a news channel that the Commerce Minister was "questioning' his professionalism.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday had congratulated Mr Banerjee but also said that his 'thinking is totally Left-leaning' and that his work had been rejected by the people of India.
Mr Banerjee had assisted the Congress party in formulating the NYAY or Nyuntam Aay Yojana scheme which promised to give Rs 72,000 annually to each of the 20 per cent families in the poorest of the poor category.
NYAY headlined the Congress manifesto for the national election, earlier this year, which it lost heavily.
Mr Banerjee, who has been a strong and vocal critic of the BJP-led government's economic policies, had recently remarked that the Indian economy is in a state of crisis.
Along with Mr Banerjee, his French-American wife Esther Duflo and Harvard University professor Michael Kremer received this year's Nobel Prize in Economics.
