Amid criticism from various quarters over the verdict by a trial that acquitted all six accused in the Pephlu Khan lynching case, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday said the verdict was shocking.
Ms Gandhi, however, expressed hope that Ashok Gehlot-led Rajasthan government's new law will give justice to Pehlu Khan, who was lynched in Alwar in 2017 for transporting cows, when the BJP government was in power in the state.
"The lower court's decision on Pehlu Khan is shocking. Our country should not have any place for such inhumanness and mob lynching is a heinous crime", the Congress general secretary tweeted.
Pointing to the 'serious shortcomings' in the investigation by the Rajasthan Police, in the case, an Alwar court on Wednesday acquitted all six accused in the Pehlu Khan lynching case, on 'benefit of doubt'.
Later, the Rajasthan government announced that it will appeal against the verdict.
Taking to twitter, Ms Priyanka added, "The Rajasthan government's decision to bring an anti-lynching law is commendable. Hope that it will give justice for Pehlu Khan and set a good example".
Ashok Gehlot-led Rajasthan government had passed a law on August 5 against mob lynching which make it a cognizable, non–bailable and non-compoundable offence with life imprisonment and fine up to Rs 5 lakh.
Pehlu Khan (55) along with his two sons and some others, were allegedly thrashed by a mob near Behror in Alwar when they were transporting cows from Jaipur.
