A Delhi Court on Tuesday allowed Christian Michel James, British businessman and alleged middleman in the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal case, to meet his lawyer friend.
The CBI has alleged that Michel had entered into about 12 contracts with AgustaWestland to legitimise the illicit commission/ kickbacks of Euro 42.27 million received on procurement of VVIP helicopters by Government of India.
After CBI, the Directorate of Enforcement also initiated proceedings against Michel under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.
Michel was first produced before the CBI court on December 05 after being extradited to India from Dubai and is now in judicial custody till February 26.
Counsel for Michael had earlier filed a bail application for Michael and submitted that there is “no basis” to keep Michel in judicial custody anymore as under the provisions of Section 167(2) Code of Criminal Procedure, neither CBI nor ED has filed a chargesheet within the stipulated 60 day period so bail should be granted to him.
He further submitted that Michel is “ready and willing” to furnish bail bond as required under Code of Criminal Procedure.
Michael had submitted before the court that he may be allowed to meet his Italian Lawyer Friend Santrolli Rosemary Patrizi Dos Anjos.
The ED, after hearing the submission of Michael, vehemently opposed the same before the court.
Upon hearing submission on behalf of Michael and the Government Counsel, Special Judge Arvind Kumar allowed the Michael to meet his counsel in Tihar Jail from Monday to Friday for half an hour.
